One-on-one time with Ms. Sarah. Ideal before a formal event, for building specific skills, or a confidence boost before term begins.
In 2019, Sarah Hedenskog, a Denver, Colorado native and mother of seven, wanted her twelve-year-old twin daughters to experience something she had cherished three decades earlier at her own Denver Country Club cotillion.
Her first class in Somerset West drew more than 30 students and was an instant success. Seven years later, Cotillion South Africa is the only program of its kind in the country, and the model that inspired The Cotillion Initiative to bring this magic to communities worldwide.

Every 90-minute session blends dancing and etiquette in a warm, structured, and genuinely fun environment.
Students practise the art of a confident greeting, eye contact, a firm handshake, and a proper introduction. This sets the tone for every class.
Students and instructors attend Cotillion in formal attire, setting a respectful atmosphere and encouraging confidence and self-respect.
Engaging, short lessons in essential real-world skills; from table manners and small talk to digital etiquette and beyond.
The main event. Ms. Sarah teaches dances step by step, from Waltz and Salsa to South Africa's beloved Sokkie, with boys and girls partnered.
Students rotate partners throughout class, building social confidence, graciousness with unfamiliar peers, and ensuring no one is left out.
Students have opportunities to interact in a kind and wholesome way, learning to improve themselves while building friendships that carry on outside our classes.
Cotillion was born in the USA, but Cotillion South Africa is proudly, joyfully local. The Sokkie, South Africa's signature partner dance, is the favourite moment of every single class. Nothing breaks the ice faster. Nothing makes kids feel more at home.
Alongside the Sokkie, students learn a full dance vocabulary that will serve them at weddings, formals, and celebrations for the rest of their lives.

"I've attended over 10 terms of Cotillion. It is really fun and feels like a break from the pressures of school. I am more confident, carry myself better, and am more aware of dressing modestly. My favourite part is definitely the Sokkie and getting to chat with everyone there. I've made a lot of friends thanks to Cotillion."
"The Cotillion Classes have truly molded our 3 children to become more mature and confident young adults. The Dance classes are of high standard and the teacher's role is invaluable as they motivate and encourage all the students, even our introverted child radiates confidence now."
"Our son was initially very nervous to join his first class, but now begs us to keep going term after term. He has made lovely new friends, learned to dance, and gained much more confidence. We especially appreciated the emphasis on timeless manners and etiquette."
"Cotillion provides a safe, supervised environment where children can socialise, learn new dances, and have fun. Our daughters look forward to every class and leave every time with the biggest smiles!"
"Cotillion has helped me grow in confidence and self-awareness. I've become more comfortable socially and more confident in how I present myself. My favourite part is the Sokkie, and meeting new people. I've made many friends through Cotillion."
"Cotillion is a weekly highlight for Ava. Being treated like a lady makes her feel so special. It is such an amazing extracurricular."

I'm Sarah Hedenskog, and I have called Somerset West home for the past 18 years. I grew up in Denver, Colorado, studied at Vanderbilt University, and spent years living across Washington DC, France, Russia, New Zealand, and Australia before settling here with my husband Jason and our wonderful blended family of seven.
I attended Cotillion as a child in Denver and never forgot what it did for my confidence. When my twin daughters turned twelve I started South Africa's very first Cotillion class right here in Somerset West, and it changed everything.
To the students, I'm simply Ms. Sarah. My door is always open, come say hello before class or drop me a message anytime.
"Cotillion and families go hand in hand. Good communication, integrity, courtesy, encouragement, and fun are all key aspects of both the etiquette and dance lessons. We provide an extra layer of support for parents hoping to mold their children into kind, respectful, and successful adults."

What age can my child start?
Junior Cotillion is open from age 10 (Grade 5). Senior Cotillion takes students from age 14. If your child falls outside these ranges, contact us, we're flexible and will find the right fit.
Does my child need any dance experience?
None at all. Every dance is taught from scratch in each class. Students who have never danced a step in their lives are welcomed warmly, and are often the most enthusiastic by week three.
How big are the classes?
Classes are kept to 30-45 students so every child receives personal attention. Ms. Sarah knows every student by name.
What should my child wear?
Semi-formal for regular classes. Girls wear knee-length dresses or skirts and comfortable dance shoes like flats, sandals or kitten-heels; boys wear collared shirts, ties, dress shoes and chinos. Part of the experience is arriving dressed with a little intention. Full details are sent upon enrolment.
Can we enrol mid-term?
Yes, subject to availability. The curriculum is modular so students can join without feeling lost. Contact us and we'll advise the best entry point.
Is there a formal event at the end of the term?
Yes, Junior and Senior Cotillion culminates in a formal end-of-term celebration where students showcase everything they've learned. Families are invited to watch and participate. It's the highlight of each term for students and parents alike.
Tell Ms. Sarah a little about your child and which class interests you. She responds to every enquiry personally, usually within 48 hours.
